(1811-1863)
Born in Calcutta, India, the son of a wealthy English officer of the East India Company, he was educated at Charterhouse School and Trinity College, Cambridge, but left without graduating. He was a journalist in Paris and in London, writing under a number of amusing pseudonyms: "Charles James Yellowplush, a footman"; "Michael Angelo Titmarsh"; and "George Savage Fitz-Boodle." He joined the staff of Punch in 1842 and published the Irish Sketchbook in 1843 and Cornhill to Cairo in 1847. He achieved fame with his novel Vanity Fair, published in parts during 1847-1848. He did two lecture tours of the United States during the 1850s.
He died of a brain hemorrhage, was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, and is memorialized by a stone in Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. His novels are noted for their humor and ironic portrayals of the middle and upper classes of his time. Some of his poems: "Dr. Birch and His Young Friends," "King Canute," "Pocahontas," "The Age of Wisdom," "The Ballad of Bouillabaisse," "The Battle of Limerick," "The Chronicle of the Drum," "The Last Irish Grievance," "The Yankee Volunteers."
